Twenty-seven years ago, our sister publication, Model Airplane News, was the first RC magazine to devote significant space to the progress, development and activities surrounding ducted-fan (DF) jets. By way of our monthly "Jet Blast" column, MAN brought focus onto this exciting and extremely popular aspect of our hobby. For this issue, we thought it might be interesting to present a snapshot of the continuing DF evolution, bringing us to where we are today. In the world of RC jet modeling, the new age of electric propulsion is now fully upon us. All the improvements in electric power, in general, apply to electric ducted-fan (EDF) jets, but these benefits are even more obvious in the jet modeling world where adding just one LiPo cell to a battery pack can make a huge difference in performance. The purpose of this article is meant to be a means of providing some basic EDF information while tracking the evolution of ducted-fan jet modeling. From its roots to its current state, we'll identify model types and propulsion systems and provide a list of sources that you might find useful.
