The Hawker Hurricane is an aircraft with a quintessential British aviation pedigree. Designed and built by one of the country's celebrated aircraft manufacturers, Hawker Aircraft Limited, of Kingston upon Thames, it was heir to an outstanding tradition of aviation design and construction that can be traced back to the superlative Sopwith Camel fighter of the First World War. The inter-war period saw Hawker become one of the world's most important producers of high-performance, state-of-the-art, biplane combat aircraft, culminating in the magnificent Hawker Fury, which is held by many to be the finest expression of the fighter biplane. As a continuation of that great tradition, the Hurricane proved to be a worthy successor, and established a combat record for itself in the Second World War which included its crucial role during that most significant of all aerial conflicts, the Battle of Britain in 1940.
