Theatrum Orbis TERRARUM - a monument to the final European mapping of the XVI century, prepared by Ortelius and published in 1570 in Antwerp. It was the first ever atlas of the modern type. Ortelius Atlas has weathered many editions, each of which provide additional clarification to the cartographer. The first edition contained 70 maps and 87 references to the sources (many of which are now lost), and in the 31st edition of 1612 - already 167 cards with references to 183 books. From the maps Ortelius was best known for detailed images of the Pacific. In addition to the Latin edition, before the end of 1572 there were translations of the atlas in German, French and Dutch. In the XVII century under the same name and on the same templates to print their atlases Dutch firm Blau.
